Obama Leaves Door Open To Tax On Health Benefits

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama left the door open to a new tax on health care benefits Wednesday, and officials said top lawmakers and the White House were seeking $150 billion in concessions from the nation's hospitals as they sought support for legislation struggling to emerge in Congress.
"I don't want to prejudge what they're doing," the president said, referring to proposals in the Senate to tax workers who get expensive insurance policies. Obama, who campaigned against the tax when he ran for president, drew a quick rebuff from organized labor.

In October 2008, hackers broke into a data goldmine at the University of California, Berkeley. They infiltrated 20 separate databases kept on a server at the health services center and over a span of six months, stole Social Security numbers, birth dates and addresses. In some cases they lifted immunization records.

Top Senator Calls For Structural Changes at VA

WASHINGTON - The chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee on Wednesday called for more centralized control of the VA medical system after recent breakdowns in cleaning colonoscopy equipment exposed thousands of veterans to the risk of contracting HIV and other infections.
Disparities in quality control procedures at VA medical centers raise questions about whether local, regional or national leaders are in charge, Democratic Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii said in a statement before the committee hearing
